LGBTQ+ Life in College: Identity, Belonging, and Support

LGBTQ+ Life in College

Coming to college can be a powerful turning point for LGBTQ+ students. For many, it is the first time they have space to explore identity, build community, and decide if, when, and how to come out. At the same time, college can bring real challenges, including navigating new social environments, balancing family expectations, dealing with campus climate, and managing mental health, safety, and basic needs. There is no single “right” way to be LGBTQ+ in college, and every student’s journey looks different.

The resources collected in this article reflect that diversity of experiences. They include research studies that examine LGBTQ+ students’ sense of belonging, well-being, food insecurity, and experiences at community colleges, universities, and religiously affiliated institutions. They also feature guides, podcasts, videos, and personal stories that center student voices and offer practical advice on coming out, allyship, pronouns, and navigating campus life. Together, these sources highlight both the systemic barriers LGBTQ+ students may face and the resilience, creativity, and community that help students thrive.
